The accessory belt is the belt that drives the different auto accessories in your ride such as the A/C compressor, the alternator, and the water pump. To be able to drive these parts efficiently, the belt should be properly tensioned. Now that's what the tensioner does-maintain proper tension on the belt. What would happen if the correct tension is not achieved? Well, incorrect tension could mean too much tension, or too little of it, both of which are dangerous. If the tension is too much, that could break the belt or intensify its wearing. If it's too little, then the belt may slacken and get dislodged from its mounting location. Both situations will lead to the non-operation of the parts being driven by the belt-talk about different components in your ride dying on you altogether. Well, not a good idea. Keep the accessory belt tensioner in great shape at all times.

It's also important that you inspect the belt every once in a while. If you notice that the tension in the belt is not normal, check the accessory belt tensioner-it might be starting to fail. Check the tensioner pulley and the tensioner arm. If the pulley is damaged, you'll have a less expensive problem because all you'll need to replace is the pulley.
