By supplying air into the exhaust ports in order to help in the burning of the toxic gases. The heart of the air injection system is the air pump. It is this component which supplies the air into the exhaust system for proper gas burning. The air pump is a simple part that can either be driven by a belt or by a motor. In most cases, it is these two parts that experience problem and cause the pump to malfunction. When the belt is not properly tensioned, it can either slacken or break. And when any of these happen, the pump that it is driving will die. Or, if any of the parts of the motor gets damaged, the motor will fail and so will the pump.

Depending on the degree of the problem, a repair or a replacement may be needed. If the problem is with the main air pump and not with the parts driving or operating it, a replacement is a must.
