Clock Spring

Picture of Clock Spring The clock spring in your vehicle is in no way connected to the clock. It is mounted in the steering column, designed as a connector to the electrical parts installed in the area of the steering wheel-the airbag, the horn, the cruise control, and others. All these parts are electrically operated, so they need to be properly connected so that they'll receive their needed voltage to properly operate. However, the constant turning of the steering wheel when you drive presents a problem. This is why a clock spring is needed. This spring enables good connection between the parts found in the steering area and the entire electrical system, all while making it possible to turn the steering wheel to the left or to the right. This happens because of the winding and unwinding of the part, thus its given name. However, while the spring is a useful addition, it can cause the malfunctioning of parts like the horn and airbag when it's damaged. When the spring fails, electrical connection to the parts in the steering area are disrupted.

One of the most obvious signs of a failing clock spring is the simultaneous malfunctioning of the parts mounted in the steering assembly. If you notice that your airbag has failed, followed by the non-operation of such part as the horn, there's a great chance it's the spring that's busted.
