Simple tasks such as braking or accelerating would be virtually impossible without the clutch. The clutch allows the smooth mechanical transition from one mechanical task to another. Without the clutch, the engine would easily be damaged because the spinning of the crankshaft will always be forcefully interrupted. The clutch allows the wheels to stop, change speed, and change direction without disturbing the engine.

Engaging and disengaging the engine is possible because of the clutch mechanism. Typically, the clutch is connected to the flywheel of the engine via a pressure plate.
