Without the clutch, the engine would easily be damaged because the spinning of the crankshaft will always be forcefully interrupted. DFX Clutch

Engaging and disengaging the engine is possible because of the clutch mechanism. Typically, the clutch is connected to the flywheel of the engine via a pressure plate.
