The rear view mirrors like the CIPA rear view mirror are found in two common locations. Some are affixed on the top of the windshield on a swivel mount and some are installed on top of the dashboard. Their location differences are not a hindering factor with regards to their function and purpose in the vehicle. Either location, they are still able to perform their function which is to allow the driver to see the area behind the vehicle and through the back window without keeping his eyes off the road or turning his head around.

Most rear view mirrors have selection switches that allow the mirror to shift to day or night modes. These switches work by tilting the mirror inside its glass housing without affecting the exterior glass housing of the mirror. Shift to night modes occur when the switches tilts the mirror upward at about five degrees, at this position the majority of light that strikes the mirror is diverted to the headliner of the vehicle. The lights are generally bounced off from the glass housing of the mirror.
