In a typical four-stroke engine, real mechanical power is produced during the power stroke. The remaining strokes are mere mechanical necessities in achieving the power stroke. True engine performance is dependent on the power stroke. The other three strokes may drain the power of the engine if the pressure buildup is not properly timed. As the gasoline is ignited inside the cylinder chamber, it is converted into flaming gas that expands and pushes the pistons. Enough pressure must be present to sustain the piston motions. Conversely, there should be very minimal or even zero exhaust pressure inside the cylinder chambers as the pistons settle down after explosive expansion of the fuel-air mixture.
Exhaust gases are released during the exhaust stroke to relieve pressure inside the chambers. At the beginning of the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens while the piston forces the exhaust gases out of the chambers. However, power is wasted if there is resistance that the piston must overcome. This usually happens when the exhaust gases do not readily exit the exhaust valves because of the spatial limitation of the valve to accommodate exiting exhaust gases. This phenomenon is called back pressure.
