Headers are simple yet effective solution to the problem of back pressure. Back pressure consumes a lot of engine power that results to ineffective engine output and power loss. Back pressure is the residual resistance inside the cylinder chambers that results from the inability of the exhaust gases to immediately escape before the piston recompresses. Basically, there are four piston strokes that occur in order to sustain combustion and produce mechanical power output. The real engine power, however, is only achieved during a power stroke. Timing is everything when achieving a power stroke. The exhaust gases must already have exited the chambers in time for the fuel injection and ignition. At this moment, the piston must be precisely positioned to optimally receive the force of expanding gases.
However, if there is residual pressure resistance left inside the chamber, power is consumed instead of being produced. This happens when there is no enough room for the exhaust gases to escape. As the exhaust valve opens, the piston returns to its resting position compressing the remaining exhaust gas inside the combustion chamber. This is called the exhaust stroke. Back pressure occurs during the exhaust stroke.
