Defective
Clogged Catalytic Converter
|
| |
|
A
catalytic converter is defective when it becomes clogged,
poisoned, or physically damaged. When the catalytic convertor
becomes clogged you may actually feel the decrease in performance
and notice a decrease in fuel economy. A clogged catalytic
convertor traps exhaust gas in front of the catalyst. This
trapped exhaust gas creates back-pressure which prevents the
your engine from breathing properly. The increased back-pressure
may also cause the engine to quit after a few minutes of driving
or make the engine feel like it is starving for fuel. Sometimes
you may actually hear a whistling sound when the throttle
is applied indicating a restricted exhaust flow or catalytic
converter problem.

A
sure sign that your catalytic convertor is bad is when you can
hear rattling noises emitting from the catalyst which has broken
apart from the converter casing or converter shell. This rattling
may be noticed more when the car is idling and decrease in volume
as speed is increased. If you discover that your catalytic converter
has failed you must determine why the converter failed to protect
your new catalytic converter from being
damaged.

A common cause for catalytic convertor failure is a defective
oxygen
sensor or failure to do a scheduled tune
up. A defective oxygen sensor, O2 sensor, will cause the
engine to run out of tune causing the converter to actually
meltdown as depicted in the illustration above. Oxygen sensors
are a maintenance item and should be replaced according to your
vehicle manufacturer recommendation. We recommend that you always
change the oxygen sensor when your catalytic converter is being
replaced. We also recommend that you change your oxygen sensor
with a brand that states it has an OE, original equipment, type
connector. Most Bosch oxygen sensors and NGK oxygen sensors
have an OE type of connector just to name just a couple. Buy

| There
are now many choices of catalytic converters that may fit your
vehicle. We recommend going with a direct fit catalytic convertor
which will bolt up without welding. If you are looking for increased
performance, high performance catalytic converters are now available.
This high flow catalytic converter coupled with a performance
cat
back exhaust system will result in increased horsepower
since the decreased back-pressure will allow your engine to
breathe better. |
