If your car does not have the ability to stop itself, you are putting your life on the line every time you drive. That's why it is so important to maintain your brakes. One of the easiest components of your brakes to maintain is your BMW 530i brake rotors.
The 530i brake rotors are part of your disc braking system that also includes brake pads, brake calipers, a master cylinder, and a series of brake lines and hoses. When you step on your brakes, your calipers bring the brake pads on either side of your BMW 530i brake rotors into contact with them, which generates friction used to stop the rotating motion of your wheels.
In addition, your 530i brake rotors help to keep your brakes clean as you are driving, throwing off water and dirt as they spin. The type of brake pads your car uses will often determine the life of your BMW 530i brake rotors.
Your brake pads consist of a frictional lining mounted on metal backing plates. The lining is either metallic and made with powdered copper or bronze, or organic and made with high-temperature resin and fillers. Metallic brake pads are rough on your 530i brake rotors, causing them to wear down and lose their effectiveness faster. Organic or "soft" brake pads are made to prevent damage to your BMW 530i brake rotors. However, if you do not change your soft brake pads when the thickness of the lining drops below a quarter of an inch or less, you risk damaging your 530i brake rotors when the edges start to grind against the metal backing plate. If your brakes are grinding, shuddering, or pulling to one side, it is likely that you need new BMW 530i brake rotors.
