Like most, the Chevrolet C2500 engine has two manifolds: one is the intake and the other is the exhaust. The intake manifold, also sometimes called the "inlet," takes the air-fuel mixture into the cylinders. The exhaust manifold is often called the "header." Its job is to gather waste gases from the cylinders after they've been burned, and pass them into the exhaust system.

Because these exhaust gases are very, very hot, the Chevrolet C2500 header is made of cast iron able to withstand the extremely high temperatures generated by the ignition process. Once inside the exhaust manifold, waste gases go onto the catalytic converter.

There are two types of headers: one is the common collector style header, which uses pipes that merge into the collector. The other one is called a "zoomie" header, which are usually found only on race cars. These do not have collectors. A typical stock Chevrolet C2500 header is a collector type.
