Even after the 1940's, when cars assumed the more streamlined configuration of today, pickup trucks were a holdout. As late as the early 1960's, the Chevy "Stepside" option offered a narrower bed wedged between pontoon-style fenders and a short running board (or "step") between the front of the fender and the rear of the cab.
The Fleetside, on the other hand, was the first pickup to actually have an over-the-wheels bed. Nonetheless, the Stepside was offered right up to the end, although those outside fenders had shrunk quite a bit.
