It is a coarse, gritty substance designed to work with your solid metal brake rotors to generate friction, which your vehicle uses to stop the rotation of your wheels. There are two types of SSR brake pads: metallic, and non-metallic. Non-metallic brake pads are the most common types used, because they do not cause excessive rotor wear. Also called soft or organic, this type of brake pad is made with high-temperature resins and organic fillers. Metallic Chevy SSR brake pads use powdered copper or bronze in the lining, which lasts longer than soft pads and provides better braking power, but wears down rotors faster. No matter which type of SSR brake pads your vehicle uses, it is important to change them when the thickness of the lining is between an eighth and a quarter of an inch.
