In Latin, the word "manifold" means "shaped like a hand." Some early engineer probably noticed that the collections of pipe attached to the engine block looked like a cradling pair of hands. Every internal combustion engine has a pair of manifolds: one functions to take fuel and air into the cylinders and the other disposes of waste products after burning. Since the intake manifold, or inlet is a passage for the relatively cool fuel-air mixture, it is usually made out of aluminum.

The exhaust manifold, also known as the "header," collects hot exhaust gases from the cylinders for delivery to the exhaust system via the catalytic converter. These exhaust gases are very hot, so these headers are made of heat-resistant cast iron.

The headers used by virtually every street-legal vehicle are of the collector style. The individual pipes exit from the cylinders and merge into a collector before moving on to the exhaust system.
