Before 1950, cars and pickup trucks alike had those big, sweeping "pontoon-style" fenders outside the body as well as running boards that connected the front and rear fenders. These disappeared on passenger cars about 1949, but pickup trucks continued to have them as late as the early 1960's. Dodge Trucks lost their outside fenders and running boards with their innovative 1955 D100 model, which they called the "Sweptside." In losing those graceful fenders, it gained an automatic transmission - which is another story.
In the meantime, those running boards were, as far as the Dodge Truck was concerned, history. Running boards are handy - you can sit on them, and they really help in getting in and out of those tall vehicles - especially if you're short, have bad knees, or aren't as young as you used to be.
The good news is, you don't need have to have outside fenders to install running boards. Dodge Truck Running Boards are available right here.
They are an affordable after market accessory that is easy to install to the sides of your cab. You can also get Dodge Truck Running Boards running the length of the bed. They make getting in and out of the cab a whole lot easier, and provide a handy platform for loading/unloading the bed. Log on and check out our online listings today.
