The shock consists of a hydraulic tube filled with oil and a piston that moves up and down in the oil. The entire shock connects on one end to the frame and on the other to the axel. When the springs move, the piston moves up or down through the oil. That piston has tiny perforations, allowing small amounts of oil to seep through while still providing enough resistance to control the vibrations caused by the springs.
