Brake Caliper for Mercury Monterey
The name "Mercury Monterey" was actually applied to two completely different, unrelated Mercury models. The classic "Monterey" was Mercury's flagship sedan from 1950 to 1974 - "4,000 lbs. of Pure Decadence." The sleek lines of those early classic vehicles are greatly coveted by car collectors.

The brake caliper on a car is not a whole lot different from that on a bicycle. In both cases, a mechanism resembling pincers closes around a disc. In the case of the bicycle, the calipers are operated by hand, and consist of hard rubber closing around the metal rim. With the automobile, it is the other way around: the metal calipers close around a disk that is covered by a mixture of steel wool, resin and Kevlar, which comprises the brake pad. Also, since stopping a 40 lb. bicycle with a 180 lb. passenger traveling at 15 MPH is an easier matter than stopping a 2-3 ton automobile traveling at 35-50 MPH, the later uses a special hydraulic system which is virtually always power-assisted these days.
