In Latin, the word "manifold" refers to something that is shaped like a hand. To an early engineer, these devices probably looked eerily like a pair of hands with its "fingers" reaching into or exiting from each cylinder. The Mitsubishi Eclipse engine, like those on all internal combustion devices, has two manifolds: the intake, or inlet and exhaust, or header.

Unlike the relatively light aluminum intake manifold, the Mitsubishi Eclipse header (exhaust manifold) is made from industrial cast iron in order to stand up to the temperatures generated by the burning fuel. The header collects exhaust gases and delivers them to the exhaust system via the catalytic converter.

There are two types of header: the collector style header that uses pipes which merge into the collector, and the "zoomie" header, which has no collector. Virtually all street vehicles use the former, while the latter is used primarily for racing vehicles, and not even legal for street use. Headers have long been available from after market sources - in fact, these after market headers are often installed nowadays as original equipment.
