W.C. Fields carried on his high jinx in vaudeville and movies for a generation. His delivery of lines and his timing, are, well, timeless.

He wrote and starred in most of his movies. Arguably his finest was the “Bank Dick.” He plays a no-account, who through blind luck, captures a back robber.

As a reward, the bank hires him as a plain clothes security guard, thus the title of the picture. At the end of the film he fails in foiling another bank heist and the robber forces him to drive the get away car.

They speed through the town on out onto the curving country roads while the real police are hot on their trail. W.C.’s car is going faster and faster until the bank robber, who has stashed his stash and himself in the back seat, tells Fields to slow down. The next scene is of the floor of the car with the brake peddle being depressed and going right through the floorboard. Telling how the car finally comes to a stop would ruin the end of the movie.
