Brake Rotors for Scion XA
The term "brake rotor" isn't entirely accurate - at least not anymore. In the old days, a pair of brake shoes expanded outward from the center of the braking mechanism against the inner surfaces of a cylinder-shaped component. Today's brakes operate on the same hydraulic principles, using a high-pressure liquid to activate the braking machinery - but that mechanism has changed.
Instead of shoes expanding against surfaces from the inside, a pair of calipers clamp down around a disk from the outside, much like a pair of bicycle brakes. The "disk" in this case is the brake rotor.
Scion XA Brake Rotors are part of the wheel mechanism. The action of the calipers squeezing down on the rotors is what slows the wheels and ultimately stops the vehicle.
In order to prevent the bare metal of the calipers from digging into the bare metal of the rotors, a layer of resin, steel wool and (in some cases) Kevlar - called the brake pad - is attached to the rotor. If the brake pad is allowed to wear through completely, metal-on-metal contact between the calipers and the rotors can cause major damage.
