The antifreeze, also called coolant, moves throughout your engine and cylinder heads in a closed loop that starts and ends at the radiator. The purpose of the coolant is to pull heat away from the engine parts so that the engine will not overheat. The radiator’s job, in turn, is to cool down the antifreeze that has heated from the engine.

If the thermostat notices that the engine is getting too hot, it will open up to allow the radiator to start cooling the antifreeze. Be warned, however, that your radiator can become cracked, jammed or broken. This may cause the internal fan to stop spinning, which may reduce the amount of heat transferred away from the coolant.
